Stacking Door FAQs

A sliding stacking door is a multi-panel door system in which glass panels slide and stack neatly behind one another to create a wide opening. Unlike standard sliding doors, stacking doors allow most of the doorway to open up, making them ideal for alfresco areas, entertaining spaces, and large indoor–outdoor transitions.

Stacking doors are generally more expensive than standard sliding doors due to their larger size, multiple panels, and heavier-duty framing. However, they also offer a much wider opening, stronger visual impact, and a greater indoor–outdoor connection, which many homeowners consider well worth the investment—especially for living and entertaining areas.

The key difference between stacking doors and sliding doors is the extent of the opening that can be accessed. Standard sliding doors typically open halfway, with one panel sliding behind the other. Stacking doors allow multiple panels to slide and stack together, creating a much larger clear opening.

For a deeper comparison, see Stacked Sliding Doors vs. Standard Sliding Doors.

Stacking doors require more wall space for the panels to stack, and their larger size means installation needs to be precise. They can also cost more than simpler door systems. Still, these considerations are often outweighed by the expansive openings, strong aluminium construction, and long-term durability they offer.

The new trend instead of bifold doors is stacking doors. Aluminium stacking doors have largely replaced bifold doors in modern builds. They offer smoother operation, better weather sealing, improved security, and cleaner sightlines—without the heavy folding panels and hardware that bifold systems rely on.

Yes, stacking doors are very secure. Our stacking doors feature multi-point locking systems designed to resist forced entry. For added protection, they can also be paired with optional security screen upgrades, including 316 marine-grade stainless steel woven mesh or perforated marine-grade aluminium, providing both security and airflow without compromising the look of the door.

Stacker doors are available in a wide range of sizes to fit almost any opening. Our range includes a wide selection of standard sizes, with 3-panel stacking doors up to 2400mm high x 3730mm wide, and 6-panel stacking doors up to 2486mm high x 5290mm wide. Custom sizes are also available, allowing stacking doors to be tailored to larger openings or specific design requirements. Contact us to place a Special Order on custom sizes.

Stacking doors can be purchased with or without screens. Fly screens are not included as standard, but we offer aluminium fly mesh screens are available as an optional upgrade. You can also upgrade to other mesh options, including steel mesh for greater durability and migi mesh, which is recommended for homes near waterways. Security screen upgrades are also available.

Fly screens are ideal for keeping insects out while still allowing airflow, especially in alfresco and entertaining areas.
