How to Measure Doors

To measure doors, you will need a measuring tape, a pen or pencil, and a piece of paper.

A door assembly comprises various elements. The wall studs surround the door’s reveal – the surrounding timber frame fitted to the door, the plasterboard covers the wall studs, and the architrave frames the reveal. So, where do you measure from to know what size replacement door to order?

The reveal opening is where you want to take your measurements. It is the distance between the inside of the door’s surrounding timber frame (its reveal).

To get the correct door measurements, measure the height (first measurement) and the width (second measurement) inside the reveal. Write down these measurements in millimetres.

If you find your existing door is not of a standard size, you may have to remove the door and measure back to the stud opening to see home much room you have to play with. The stud opening is the full width between the two studs on either side of the reveal.  There are usually packers between the stud and the reveal that you can discard and alter for a better fitting. You can then see which standard-size door will fit your space best. As mentioned, we also offer custom doors, so if our standard sizes don’t fit, we can create the perfect fit for your replacement. Conclusion

Replacing a single door or window or replacing all the doors and windows in your Perth home is a relatively straightforward process, providing you get your measurements right!

Whether it’s a door or a window, the measuring process is the same. You want to measure the height (in millimetres) first by measuring inside the window frame from the top to the bottom of the reveal. Once you have the height, do the same for the width, measuring from side to side of the reveal.

Once you have your measurements, you can head into our showroom or visit our online store’s Doors & Windows category to place your order.
