As you may have read, I am currently planning my own home renovation. And, while I am looking to minimise costs as much as possible, especially during these uncertain times that we’re currently facing, there are two rooms of the house where I don’t mind splurging. The rooms I’m referring to are my bathroom and kitchen.
Any savvy homeowner knows a kitchen has the potential to sell a home. Therefore when it comes time to invest in a kitchen renovation, you need to keep this in mind – particularly if you plan on selling your home in the next five or so years.
There are various ways to renovate kitchens in Perth; you can hire someone to do the entire kitchen; the design and build, you can have someone design it and manage your own build, or you can do it all yourself! Personally, I like to do it all myself! With planning and researching current design trends and products, I can create my dream kitchen at a fraction of the cost that it would have otherwise cost.
At Ross’s Discount Home Centre, we’ve built a strong reputation as being the “go-to” centre for kitchens in Perth. We not only stock everything you need to complete a renovation, but we also have the knowledge necessary to plan and execute a DIY kitchen renovation. Thus, continue reading this article as I share my expertise with you. Oh, and I’ll also offer a few product suggestions to aid you product sourcing along the way.

First things first, are you planning to renovate an existing kitchen or are you renovating your entire home and moving the position of your kitchen?
If you are renovating an existing kitchen, then you have fewer variables to consider, and your kitchen is likely to be much more affordable than if you were to move the location of your kitchen.
For those renovating an existing kitchen, the most important element to decide is whether you are moving the plumbing or leaving the plumbing where it currently is.
For those relocating the kitchen, first, you need to look at the costs associated with moving the plumbing to a new location to see if it is viable. If your home is built on a concrete slab, this can be challenging and very costly. Therefore, it is a good idea to get in touch with a local Perth plumber at this point of the process to request a quote.
Knowing your kitchen position, you can then get overall measurements to start planning the design. There are many online tools which make this a simple process, including our very own 3D Kitchen Planner, which I highly recommend you have a crack at. This tool and many like it, allow you to play with the positioning of cabinets to work out the best layout for your area and needs.
The kitchen layout is the most crucial element of any kitchen. It’s not what tiles you use or if you have a stone or laminate benchtop; it is that your layout fits the space well and is highly functional.
Therefore, before you start buying kitchen cabinetry in Perth, spend a good amount of time looking at your space to make it work for you. Now, I know earlier I mentioned that leaving the plumbing where it is will save you money. However, this isn’t a smart move if the existing kitchen layout isn’t functional. It may not be worth the money saved on plumbing if you find the layout isn’t working.
There are countless kitchen layouts to consider based on the size, shape and positioning of your kitchen. For some kitchen layout inspiration, please refer to my earlier posts, ‘What Is Your Kitchen Layout Preference?‘ and ‘How To Choose The Right Kitchen Layout Shape‘.
With a layout set, you can then think about what cabinets you need. I find the best way to do this is to look at my existing kitchen cabinets and how I use them. Currently, I could do with more drawers and fewer cupboards, so my design will have two drawer cabinets. I also don’t want my microwave and wall oven stacked, so this will be another change I make when choosing my cabinets.
There are countless kitchen cabinet options to consider; base cabinets, wall cabinets, pantry cabinets, combination cabinets, above fridge cabinets etc., and choosing the best combination can be difficult if not visualised. This is why our 3D Kitchen Planner is so handy. It allows you to build your exact kitchen layout with the precise cabinets to ensure your planning is perfect.
Now you can start thinking about how your kitchen will look, which is what many look forward to most! At this stage, you should have a rough budget in mind for your kitchen. Don’t forget it because it’s at the design stage where it often gets thrown out the window!
There are many elements to consider when designing a kitchen in Perth. You need to choose products for the following;
- Cabinet Design
- Benchtop Design
- Splashback Design
- Tapware Design
- Sink Design
Let’s take a look at each of these in a little detail.
Kitchen Cabinet Design
When choosing kitchen cabinets, it is important to remember that the average kitchen has a 15-year lifespan. So the kitchen you build in 2020, still needs to look good in 2035. While it’s tempting to choose kitchen cabinets with trending finishes, it may mean that they will date sooner than classic white kitchen cabinets such as those we sell here at Ross’s Discount Home Centre.
Also, if you’re planning a DIY kitchen in Perth, you will want to check how the cabinets are delivered to you. Are they flat-pack, meaning you have to assemble them all yourself. Or, are they pre-assembled like our range, where all the assembly has been done for you, and you need only fix them into position? You can find out more about the cabinets in one of my earlier posts.
Secondary to the kitchen cabinets design is the benchtop design; they need to complement each other. First, you need to consider the material; laminate, stone, timber, bamboo, stainless steel, etc., and the colour/design; it can be complementary, contrasting or monochromatic.
You will note in your research that stone and laminate benchtops are by far the favoured choice for kitchens in Perth. We stock an extensive range of each here at Ross’s Discount Home Centre. Currently, our most popular stone benchtop designs include Yukon Blanco, White Storm, and Blanco Maple, and trending laminate benchtop designs include Calcutta Marble, Arcadia, and Bianco Carrara.
You can find advice and tips on choosing a benchtop design in my earlier posts, ‘How To Choose The Perfect Kitchen Benchtop Design‘ and ‘Tips On Choosing The Right Kitchen Benchtop Design’.
When considering the splashback, you too have various materials and products to choose between; from tiles and glass, to mirror and pressed metal. However, the most traditional, and still very much on trend with kitchens in Perth today is tiles.
When considering which splashback tile to choose, think about the colour scheme of your cabinets and benchtop and choose a colour or design that again is, complementary, contrasting or monochromatic.
You will find one of the largest selection of feature tiles, which are ideal for splashbacks here at Ross’s Discount Home Centre. Currently, our most popular splashback tiles include Tuscany Wood Light Grey Short Herringbone, Art Deco White Hexagon, and the always classic and very traditional, Gloss White Wall Tile 10x30cm.
You can find advice and tips on choosing a splashback design in my earlier posts,’ The Best Options for Kitchen Splashbacks Are…‘, and ‘4 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Kitchen Splashback’.
Thankfully, choosing kitchen tapware is much easier than selecting the cabinets, benchtop and splashback! There are, however, many designs and types of tapware to consider, the most popular being a kitchen mixer, which you’ll find many of in our range.
The only thing left to consider now is your sink. Do you want a double sink or single sink? Do you want a drying area or no drying area? This is entirely a personal choice.
We stock a range of kitchen sinks, and you’re sure to find what you’re after in our range. Our most popular sinks are the NuGleam 1380 Double Bowl Double Drainer, NuGleam 780 Single Bowl Sink, and the Squareline Plus One And A Half Bowl.
There are many ways to approach a kitchen renovation; you can have someone else manage the entire project, or you can take on all the planning yourself and have trades come where needed.
For those renovating their own Kitchen in Perth, first, consider the position of the kitchen and then the layout. Next, you can work on the kitchen design and product selection. Only once you have everything planned or organised, should you then get in your trades and order your products.
