Hinged Door FAQs

A hinged door is a door that swings open on side-mounted hinges, rather than sliding on a track. Our aluminium hinged doors suit everyday entries such as front doors, laundries, and balconies, and they also function as a “French-style” double door when you want a wider opening into an alfresco or courtyard.

Aluminium French doors are a great option because aluminium stays straight, handles weather well, and needs very little maintenance compared to timber. In our range, you can also choose a double-door configuration with hardware designed for daily use, delivering the classic French-door look with a modern, durable frame.

The disadvantages of aluminium doors include higher upfront cost, thermal conductivity if poorly specified, and the potential for visible dents or scratches compared to timber. Aluminium naturally conducts heat, so systems without quality seals or appropriate glazing can feel cold to the touch and may contribute to heat loss, heat gain, or condensation. Repairs to damaged frames can also be more complex, and some homeowners prefer the traditional appearance of timber over aluminium’s modern look. However, these considerations generally apply to solid or low-spec aluminium doors, rather than modern glazed aluminium hinged doors with premium seals and glazing options, such as those in our range.

The difference between a double door and a French door is mostly design and intent. A double door simply means two hinged doors that meet in the middle. A French door usually refers to a double hinged door where the look is more “feature” focused and commonly includes glass panels to bring in light and create that classic open-through feel. Our Double French Doors are a good comparison example.

The disadvantages of French doors include the need for clear swing space (inside or outside), potential for greater heat gain or loss if you choose extensive glass, and increased cleaning due to the extra glazing. They may also require the right glass selection for privacy and compliance in certain areas (such as bathrooms or full-height panels).

French doors can add value to a house by improving natural light, creating a stronger indoor–outdoor connection, and making living areas feel larger and more premium. Buyers also tend to like the “feature opening” look, especially when the doors suit the home’s style and the hardware feels solid.

The door colour that often adds the most value is black, as it looks modern and crisp and pairs well with most exterior palettes (white, limestone, brick, and rendered finishes). In our range, the closest match is the Night Sky frame colour, which gives that bold “modern front entry” look without feeling trendy or fussy.
