Why You Should Consider Timber-Look Tiles

No doubt you know that timber adds a unique feel, look and warmth to any space. However, using natural timber has its own set of disadvantages. Thankfully, you can always consider timber look tiles as a fantastic alternative to natural timber.

There are many advantages of choosing timber-look tiles. First of all, they are more cost-efficient than natural timber. And, unlike natural timber, timber-look tiles are more durable and sustainable—they don’t expand or shrink with changing temperatures. There is also very little maintenance associated with timber look tiles. Furthermore, timber look tiles are available in a wide range of styles and designs for you to choose from.

Are Timber-Look Tiles Better Than Real Timber?

It is a fair question, and one I get asked regularly in our Guildford showroom. My honest answer — for most Perth homes, yes. Here is why.

I have renovated several properties over the years, and I have experienced the limitations of solid timber flooring firsthand. At the housewarming for the first home I ever renovated, I had just had the hardwood floors professionally sanded and polished. They looked incredible. By the time the last guest left, there were nail punctures everywhere from someone’s high heels. That was all it took — and I lived with those marks for the next 15 years. Every time I moved the fridge or dishwasher, another scratch. Every few years, the polish started flaking. Solid timber flooring looks fantastic on day one, but daily wear and tear catches up with it faster than most people expect.

Oak timber-look tiles would never have had that problem. Our Oak and Pinewood ranges are glazed porcelain, which means they are extremely hard, highly water resistant, and backed by a 10-year quality assurance guarantee. They will look the same on the day you decide to renovate again as they did the day they were laid.

What About Engineered Timber Flooring?

I looked seriously at hybrid and engineered timber flooring when renovating my own home. Ultimately I chose porcelain tiles, and the deciding factor was simple — the salesperson could not guarantee the hybrid flooring would not be affected by water. Porcelain tiles carry no such uncertainty. They are fully waterproof, will not expand or separate if water gets in, and will not bend or kick up at the edges the way cheaper engineered options do.

Engineered timber flooring can be re-sanded 2–4mm, which gives it some longevity. Laminate and hybrid options cannot be re-sanded at all. Porcelain timber-look tiles require no sanding, no polishing, and no refinishing — ever.

That said, if hybrid flooring suits your space better than tiles — particularly in bedrooms or open-plan living areas where warmth underfoot matters — we stock our own hybrid flooring range from $30 per m². Our hybrid flooring guide covers when it makes sense over tiles.
