What do I need to consider when looking at cutting a benchtop?

When cutting a laminate benchtop, there are a couple of things to consider; namely, getting the cut point correction and preventing the laminate from chipping.

To get the correct cut point, place the benchtop into position on the base cabinets and the overhang. Standard overhand is 4cm, so subtract 4cm from the overhang to find your cut line.

To prevent the laminate from chipping when cutting, simply apply masking tape to the cut line on the upward face and underside of the laminate.

How thick should a benchtop be?

A benchtop can be any thickness. The standard thickness is 3.9cm; however, this ultimately determined by your chosen material. For instance, laminate benchtops are 3.8cm thick, as too are standard timber benchtops. Yet, stone benchtops are available in various thicknesses, relative to the manufacturer.

The Silestone benchtops in our Stone Benchtop range comes in three thicknesses; 1.2cm, 2cm, and 3cm, while other stone benchtop manufacturers offer thicknesses of 2cm and 4cm.

All doors and drawers in our DIY Kitchen & Laundries range feature a white, high-gloss two-pack polyurethane finish to provide superior quality and longevity. In our manufacturing process, we first apply primer paint to the HMR board, then apply two topcoats of two-pack polyurethane, which is baked in an oven between coats to dry.

Which benchtop is best?

Benchtops come in a variety of materials, which each offer different properties and price points. Common benchtop materials include granite, quartz, laminate, wood, and stainless steel.

To determine which benchtop is best, it’s a case of which material offers the best longevity; which provides the highest level of scratch-resistance, stain-resistance etc.

Toping the list is Quarts, which on Mohs’ scale of hardness scores a 7. Granite is a composite, made of feldspar and quartz, with a hardness of 6 and 7 respectively. Therefore, Quarts is tougher than granite, and it’s far more robust than stainless steel, laminate, and timber.

For this reason, we stock Silestone benchtops in our Stone Benchtop range. Silestone is a compound made up of 90% natural quartz and is backed by a 25-year warranty.
