Tile Trends Set to Dominate in 2023

Is 2022 the year for your long-awaited kitchen or bathroom renovation? Or, are you splurging out on a new home or an entire home renovation? However big or small the scope of your upcoming project may be, whether it’s a room or an entire house, chances are, you’ll need tiles.

Tiles are one of the few finishing materials used throughout the home. They’re not only a popular floor covering, but they help bring style, class and colour to kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Thus, choosing tiles is one task you won’t be able to avoid.

Now, I’ve published many timeless articles sharing advice on choosing bathroom tiles, kitchen tiles, wall tiles, feature tiles, ceramic tiles and even porcelain tiles. And while the information in these articles is handy, it won’t help you choose tiles trending today. Only a current article outlining current tile trends will help in this respect.

So, today, I will focus on tiles that are currently trending and expected to trend in 2023. By following the trends featured in this article, you can be sure to design a style space that’s bang on-trend.

Trending Tiles of 2023

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to trending tiles for 2023. However, there is a strong focus on natural-looking tiles and tiles that add warmth and texture to a space.

Terrazzo-Look Tiles

Terrazzo-look tiles replicate the timeless beauty and elegance of actual terrazzo without the exorbitant cost or ongoing upkeep. Their timeless appeal and distinctive, scattered patterns have meant they have remained a popular interior design choice.

Traditional terrazzo tiles are created by embedding tiny bits of natural stone (such as marble and granite) or coloured glass into a concrete tile and allowing it to cure. Each tile is unique, making them an attractive option for use as a floor or wall tile throughout the interiors of your house.

Due to their multifaceted appearance and seemingly limitless colour palette, there is genuinely a terrazzo-look tile for every home.

Terrazzo-look tiles started making headway around 2019, and this trend is just getting stronger and stronger. They’re the next best alternative for those seeking a lightweight and low-maintenance tile. Made from porcelain, they are sturdy and resilient. We don’t expect this trend to be a fad – terrazzo-look tiles are around for many years to come.

Stone & Stone-Look Tiles

One of 2021’s most popular interior design trends was a preference for organic shapes and materials in neutral tones of shadow white, subdued brown, and warm neutrals. So it’s only natural to assume that stone-look tiles will be one of 2023’s biggest tile trends.

As a result of the epidemic, we are more interested than ever in bringing nature into our homes, as seen by the current tile designs, which use nature as their primary influence. Stone-look tiles are the most popular of all ‘look’ tiles due to the variety on offer. For example, there’s a stone-look tile to mimic every type of stone, including slate, sandstone, limestone, marble and travertine, to name a few.

Stone-like tiles are expected to be in high demand in 2023 and beyond.

Wood-Look Tiles

After the past two years, it’s not surprising that many of us want to introduce calming interiors that connect us to nature. With their rough appearance and warm tones, timber-look tiles are the perfect material for such a task.

The use of natural wood has become a popular and sought-after option for floors and bathrooms. Using timber-look tiles in bathrooms allows you to include the organic look of timber without any of the downsides. Tiles can withstand damp conditions and are easy to clean, making them ideal for bathrooms.

Timber-look tiles provide the look of natural wood, its warmth and natural tones. But it also offers low maintenance and cost-effectiveness. It’s such qualities that have tipped them to become one of the biggest tile trends of 2022.

Artisan & Handmade Tiles

Numerous handmade tile collections will be popular in 2023, which will bring them back into the limelight. The beauty of handmade tiles is that they genuinely never go out of style; their elegance and attractive traits generate a specific warmth and ambience that can only be produced with the usage of a handcrafted item.

Because of their distinct and recognisable beauty, artisan and handmade tiles have long been preferred in interiors worldwide.  Their organic beauty complements every design project, from the bathroom to the kitchen and even as a prominent element in other home areas. The stunning variations of colour, form, and texture create a natural beauty in any interior design project.

With natural curves and delicate undulations on the surface, handmade tiles produce a water-like ripple effect amid the deliciously variegated colours they contain—the result; a magnificently diversified finish.

There is nothing quite like the personal touch of handmade tiles in a home, and it’s little wonder why you should expect to see them dominate in 2023.

Textured Tiles

Interior design relies heavily on the use of texture to prevent a place from feeling sterile. For example, you may add depth and comfort using textured tiles as an alternative to employing hectic patterns or colours that you don’t particularly like. The more textured a surface, the more weight it lends to a room’s appearance.

Current design trends benefit from smoother, uniform surfaces with only a hint of tactility. A preference for natural surfaces with characterful blemishes and organic charm is returning. You only have to see the popularity of the ‘look’ tiles to realise this. Stone, timber, and terrazzo tiles need not only look the part. They also need to feel the part. Hence the current trend in textured tiles.

Textured tiles come in a range of surface treatments, making it easy to integrate texture into your home. Walls, flooring, and splashback can all be personalised to your liking, thanks to the large range of options available.

Trending Tile Colours of 2023

One thing’s for sure, tiles of 2023 will be anything but dull! With earthy tones, greens, blues, and pastels all trending, the only problem will be, choosing which colour scheme to go with.

Earthy Tones

Eucalyptus and olive greens, as well as ochre and clay browns, will be prominent colour trends for 2023, reflecting our desire to be as near to nature as possible. So, it’s only natural to see these colour trends transfer to tiles.

Luxurious nature-inspired colour palettes will have rich earthy tones, which will go well with a wide range of architectural styles, from modern to conventional and classic tonalities.

Timber-look tiles, stone-look tiles mimicking marble or travertine, and deep, rich terracotta tones are all examples of earth-toned colour palettes. Brown on brown, soft creams and caramel, tan, and chocolate browns are also set to be big this year. Incorporating rich, nature-inspired tiles into a room’s design creates an inviting ambience ideal for rest and relaxation.

Green Tiles

Your guests will be green with envy if you choose this colour for your bathroom wall tiles. Maybe it’s because we’ve become “plant parents” during COVID-19 lockdown, but you can expect to see a lot of earthy, natural green tones like olive oil in 2023 as well.

We anticipate seeing this colour in master bedrooms, living areas, and bathrooms for a peaceful, nature-inspired feel. Colour schemes for bathrooms can come and go, but green is gaining popularity, with other micro-trends emerging beneath it. Colours like emerald and sage are becoming increasingly popular also.

Green tiles will be trendy in 2023, and we expect many people to use them to energise and enliven their interiors.

Blue Tiles

Aqua, azure, and arctic blues have long been popular in bathrooms, but in 2021, the richer tones of darker blues overtook them. However, one shouldn’t rule lighter blues out altogether. Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2023 is Bright Skies, a light blue defined as an “airy and fresh tone that opens up and breathes new life into any room.”

This year’s popularity of deep blues might be attributed to their eerie quality, which can give the impression of wealth and luxury. Deep blues have an undeniable elegance, and this tile trend is a great way to incorporate blue into a space without going overboard.

As the pandemic continues, it’s no wonder that the colour blue is becoming increasingly popular. It symbolises tranquilly, serenity, stability, and faith, as well as the hues of the sky and the ocean. We anticipate seeing a wide range of shades of blue, from delicate to strong, and with every undertone, from so grey it’s hard to call it blue anymore to all the way main blue dominating colour selections.

In addition to greens, anticipate seeing a lot of white as a complementing colour.

Colourful Tiles

Bathrooms have generally shown minimal colour in the past. However, the splashes of colour that started appearing in 2021 will continue in 2023. And they will continue in the form of tiles. There’s no better (or easier) way to add a splash of colour to a room, albeit a bathroom, kitchen, or other space, than through colourful tiles.

Another micro-trend developing from this tile trend is pastel-toned tiles. Wherever used, they add a feeling of awe. Feature bathroom walls, kitchen splashbacks, and laundry splashbacks can benefit from the soft and delicate tones of pastel-toned tile.

Expect traditional neutrals such as beige and white replaced with pastels like mint green, blush pink, and lemon yellow in 2023.
