The most common bathroom tiles are ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles. Both can suit walls, while many porcelain and some ceramic products are made for floors. For shower floors or other wet walking surfaces, choose the individual product by its stated application and available slip-test information rather than material name alone.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles can both be used on shower walls when the individual product is specified for wall and wet-area use. Compare format, grout joints, cleaning and finish as well as colour. Large-format tiles reduce the number of grout joints, while smaller ceramic or feature tiles can add pattern and detail.

Porcelain is often chosen for bathroom floors because it is generally dense and has low water absorption, but it is not automatically better for every project. The tile must be specified for floor use, and wet zones require appropriate product and slip information. Some ceramic floor tiles can also suit bathroom applications.

The best bathroom wall tile is one specified for the intended wall and wet-area application. Ceramic and porcelain can both work; then compare tile size, finish, cleaning, grout and how the product relates to the room’s fixtures. Mosaics, subway tiles and other feature tiles can be used selectively when their stated application suits the location.

Light-coloured tiles can reflect more light, while larger formats may reduce the visual interruption created by grout joints. Continuing a compatible tile or colour family across surfaces can also create visual flow. The result still depends on the room proportions, layout, natural light and how the tiles are set out.

Large tiles can make some small bathrooms feel calmer by reducing grout lines, but they are not always the best fit. Ask your installer to assess the room dimensions, floor waste, required falls and likely cuts before you choose the format.

There is no single best tile colour for every small bathroom. White, cream, pale beige and soft grey can help keep the room bright, while warm stone-look or restrained coloured tiles can add depth without making the space feel heavy. Compare ideas in our guide to bathroom colour schemes for Australian homes, then test samples in the room’s actual light.

Common bathroom formats include 300 × 600 mm wall and floor tiles, 600 × 600 mm floor tiles, 300 × 300 mm tiles for some floors and smaller subway tiles or mosaics for walls and details. The best size depends on the room dimensions, surface, shower waste, falls and cut layout rather than popularity alone.
